Federal Disaster Declaration Approved for Hurricane Isaias; Walton County Included
Freeport’s Hurricane Isaias recovery now has a federal funding pipeline behind it: President Donald J. Trump has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for Florida, and Walton County is on the list of covered counties. The declaration, approved Tuesday, opens federal grant money for emergency work and repairs to storm-damaged public facilities — while the household assistance many residents are still waiting on remains under review.
The approval was announced in a post from Congressman Jimmy Patronis, and WKRG confirmed the county list against the FEMA document: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington — the same 15 Northwest Florida counties Florida named when it submitted the request. The coverage window runs from Oct. 6 to the 12th, the stretch when Isaias made landfall on Friday, Oct. 9 and swept across the Panhandle.
For local governments, the public-assistance side of the declaration is the immediate payoff. It makes federal funding available to state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations to offset disaster response and recovery costs — debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities. Those are the same categories of work Walton County and the City of Freeport have been carrying since the storm, from the countywide storm debris pickup to the emergency work that kept services running.
The piece many Freeport households are watching — individual assistance — is not part of Tuesday’s approval. WKRG, citing the FEMA document, reports that assistance to individuals and households remains under review. Florida’s request paired the public-assistance ask with individual assistance for eligible residents in designated counties, and the decision on that half determines when registration would open at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. The site walked through what that program could cover for Walton households — temporary housing, basic home repairs, essential personal property — when the request went in.
FEMA indicated further designations are possible if damage costs run higher than expected, language that keeps the door open for the household-assistance piece. The major-disaster approval builds on the emergency declaration issued as the storm hit, and on a recovery effort that has already ranged from state emergency loans for storm-damaged Freeport businesses to county rules keeping hazardous waste out of the debris piles.
For Freeport, the approval backstops the public side of the recovery — the debris haul-off, the emergency work, the repairs to public facilities — while the household-aid decision remains the next milestone to watch.
