Extreme Heat Watch Issued for Freeport and Walton County Through Tuesday
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for North Walton and Central Walton County, including the City of Freeport, effective from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, with dangerously hot conditions and heat index values up to 113 degrees possible.
A concurrent Heat Advisory is also in effect for the broader Panhandle and Big Bend region from 11 AM Monday through 8 PM Monday, with heat index values up to 112 expected. The Extreme Heat Watch, elevated to a higher alert level, signals that even more dangerous conditions could develop Tuesday as temperatures across the region climb into the upper 90s. The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events, particularly for vulnerable populations.
The watch area spans a wide swath of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, including North Walton, Central Walton, South Walton, Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Franklin, Gadsden, Leon, Jefferson, Wakulla, and Liberty counties. With Freeport sitting in the North Walton zone, residents should prepare for potentially dangerous outdoor conditions Monday through Tuesday. The NWS Tallahassee forecast discussion notes that spotty temperatures could reach the century mark Monday through Wednesday, with heat index values of 105 to 115 degrees posing major heat risk.
A Rip Current Statement was also issued for Walton, Bay, and Gulf County beaches through late Monday night, with surf heights building to 2 to 3 feet and dangerous rip currents expected. While Freeport is inland from the Gulf beaches, the advisory affects South Walton coastal areas that many Freeport residents frequent during summer weekends.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and ensure access to air conditioning. The CDC recommends checking on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and those without reliable cooling. Outdoor workers should take frequent cooling breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces, and pets should never be left in vehicles.
