Why Eglin Doesn't Want You on This Stretch of Beach

Eglin Air Force Base is cracking down on trespassers in the Santa Rosa Island Closed Test Area, where violations have already surpassed half of last year’s total in just the first months of 2026.

The 96th Security Forces Squadron has stepped up patrols on the restricted stretch of Santa Rosa Island, which Eglin uses for weapons testing and training operations. Base officials say unauthorized visitors are putting themselves at real risk — and disrupting military missions.

Trespassing on the Closed Test Area carries a minimum fine of $250 for a first offense, plus potential criminal charges and loss of base recreational privileges. Fines were increased in May 2024, and enforcement has intensified this year as incidents continue to climb.

The restricted zone covers portions of Santa Rosa Island between Navarre Beach and Destin. While the island has public beach areas, the Eglin-controlled sections are clearly marked and off-limits without authorization. Boaters are also subject to restrictions in coastal waterways adjacent to the test area.

Eglin officials are asking the public to respect posted boundaries and report suspicious activity to base security.
