WCFR and Eglin Fire Crews Extinguish Early Morning Shed Fire in Freeport

Walton County Fire Rescue and Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services responded to a shed fire in the 4100 block of State Highway 20 in Freeport shortly after 2 a.m. on August 20.

The multi-agency response was dispatched just after 2 a.m. Thursday after reports of a structure fire on State Highway 20 in Freeport. WCFR crews arrived to find a shed fully involved in flames and worked quickly to contain the blaze before it could spread to nearby structures. Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services assisted on the call, providing additional personnel and equipment to support suppression efforts.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire has not been publicly disclosed. The State Fire Marshal’s Office typically responds to investigate the origin and cause of structure fires in Walton County, as it did in two recent Freeport-area fire incidents — the August 17 mobile home fire in the Portland community and the May 19 restroom fire at Grady Brown Park on US Highway 331 South.

WCFR has been particularly active in the Freeport area this month. On August 17, a tow truck driver’s chance encounter with a passerby on Highway 20 West led to a late-night response that saved a mobile home in the Portland community. That fire was knocked down within minutes of crews arriving. Earlier in the year, firefighters battled a large brush fire near Kaylea Road and Joe Dugger Road in Freeport on January 31.

The shed fire response highlights the ongoing partnership between WCFR and Eglin’s fire department. Eglin AFB Fire & Emergency Services regularly assists WCFR on structure fires in the Freeport area, as the military installation’s fire crews are stationed nearby and can provide rapid mutual aid. The two agencies have worked together on multiple incidents this year, including the Portland mobile home fire and the December 2024 structure fire on East Bayou Forest Drive in Freeport.
