Digital Billboard Rezoning on US 331 Highlights October 8 Planning Commission Agenda in Freeport

The Walton County Planning Commission will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Freeport Board Room, located at 842 State Highway 20 East in Freeport.

The Planning Commission makes recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on major development applications and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and the Land Development Code under Chapter 163 of the Florida Statutes. The commission convenes at the Freeport Board Room, which also houses the county’s Planning and Development Services office at 842 State Highway 20 East, Suite 110.

Two legislative items are on the October agenda, and one sits squarely in Freeport. Southeastern Sign Company is asking the commission to approve a small-scale future land use amendment with rezoning on a 0.15-acre tract at 18374 South US Highway 331, fronting US 331 South and Sweetwater Lane. The request, submitted by Jenkins Engineering, would change the parcel from Rural Residential to Commercial future land use and from Rural Village to General Commercial zoning to support a permanent outdoor advertising sign — a digital billboard. The property sits in Commission District 1, represented by Dan Curry, whose district office is on FL-20 East in Freeport. Staff analysis for the project calculates zero new trips for the billboard use.

The second item is a familiar carry-over. The Daughettes small-scale amendment with rezoning and Land Use Restriction Agreement — a Seaside Community Development Corp. request to move 1.2 acres at Morrison Avenue and County Highway 283 North from Residential to Commercial — is slated for continuance to the November 12, 2026, Planning Commission meeting. The item was continued from the September 10 agenda after the applicant did not provide the land use restriction agreement as advertised.

Residents can attend in person at the Freeport Board Room or join remotely through a Zoom registration link posted with the agenda on the Walton County CivicWeb portal. Meeting minutes and recorded proceedings are available through CivicWeb for those unable to attend. Recommendations from this session go to the Board of County Commissioners, which makes final decisions on the applications.
