Walton Commission to Adopt 2027-2032 Strategic Plan in DeFuniak Springs

The Walton County Board of County Commissioners will meet Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the DeFuniak Springs BCC Boardroom, 571 US Highway 90 East, where the board is scheduled to formally adopt the county’s 2027-2032 Strategic Plan.

The regular session rotates back to the DeFuniak Springs boardroom after the August 11 meeting was held at the Freeport BCC Board Room at Freeport Commons. The BCC rotates its meeting locations among DeFuniak Springs, Santa Rosa Beach, and Freeport to give residents across the county access to county government, and the September agenda packet was published with the meeting’s final agenda on the county’s CivicWeb portal.

On the same consent agenda, the board will approve the county library department’s Annual Plan of Service 2026-2027, which includes a commitment that the library “will work with stakeholders to evaluate options for a new library in Freeport in order to better fit the needs of the growing community,” alongside parallel efforts to seek funding for a new Paxton library and an expanded Santa Rosa Beach branch. The library system’s current facility tally — 23,766 square feet across all branches against a 55,973 square-foot standard recommended by the Florida Public Library Association — is the gap the Freeport evaluation is meant to address.

Adoption of the plan by resolution also locks in six strategic priority areas: Public Safety and Health, Planned Growth and Infrastructure, Environment and Natural Resources, Economic Development and Tourism, Government and Operational Performance, and Quality of Life. Several of those priorities land directly on Freeport’s doorstep — countywide cellular and internet improvements, road infrastructure prioritization, septic-to-sewer conversion, and streamlined land development rules all shape how the US 331 corridor and Freeport’s growth are managed over the next six years. The strategic plan takes effect October 1, 2026, the first day of the new fiscal year.

Freeport residents who want to weigh in on the plan or any other agenda item can attend the September 8 meeting in person; public comments are limited to three minutes on agenda items. The full agenda, including the library plan of service and the strategic plan resolution, is available through the Walton County CivicWeb portal, and the county maintains a full calendar of upcoming meetings on its website.
