Freeport High School Reassures Parents After Firearms Found in Borrowed Vehicle

Freeport High School says its students and staff were never in danger after a Thursday report of a firearm in a vehicle driven by a student led to a search that turned up two firearms belonging to the vehicle’s owner. The student had borrowed the vehicle for transportation, the school said.

School officials said they took “immediate and appropriate action” following the report of a firearm inside the vehicle, according to a statement released Thursday and first reported by WJHG/WECP. The search that followed revealed two firearms that belonged not to the student but to the owner of the borrowed vehicle.

Principal Donna Simmons moved quickly to reassure Freeport families. “We want to reassure our parents, students, and community that everyone is safe. At no point was there any indication that students or staff were in danger or that the student intended any harm,” Simmons said in the statement.

The school credited the response to cooperation from those involved, support from the school community, and assistance from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office — the agency that serves Freeport directly.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are, and will remain, our highest priority. We take every situation seriously and respond promptly in accordance with school district policies and established safety procedures,” the statement said.
