Emergency Crews Respond to Smoke Report at Freeport High School

Walton County emergency crews responded to Freeport High School Tuesday afternoon after reports of smoke from an electrical vent on campus.

A heavy presence of law enforcement and fire rescue personnel gathered at the campus while first responders investigated the source of the smoke. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said there was no immediate danger to students or staff, but officials notified the public because of the size of the response visible at the school.

Fire rescue officials planned to continue investigating the source of the smoke, which was traced to an electrical vent. In an update Tuesday evening, Freeport High School officials said the power issue was caused by a power surge, and that maintenance crews found and repaired the problem. The fire department and district personnel completed a precautionary sweep of the campus.

School officials said classes continued through the outage, and that the school worked closely with law enforcement and the fire department to keep extra personnel on hand to manage the situation.

While crews worked the smoke report, an unrelated medical emergency unfolded in a separate area of the campus. Emergency personnel responded to that incident as well, and one person was transported to a hospital. School officials reiterated the medical emergency was not related to the power issue.

The school district and the Sheriff’s Office have not announced any change to the school’s schedule, and school continued through the day as normal following repairs.
