WCSO Launches Operation Blue Bird School Zone Enforcement as Walton County Students Return
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is launching its annual Operation Blue Bird initiative on Tuesday, August 11, increasing enforcement in school zones and along bus routes as thousands of Walton County students return to classrooms for the 2026-2027 school year.
Running through the end of August, Operation Blue Bird deploys deputies to focus on school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal — the busiest traffic windows of the school day. The enforcement effort targets dangerous driving behaviors including speeding in school zones, distracted driving, passing stopped school buses, illegally passing vehicles on the shoulder, and seat belt and child restraint violations.
Motorists should expect an increased law enforcement presence around schools and along bus routes during peak travel times. For Freeport commuters who drive Highway 20, US 331, and surrounding roads near Freeport Elementary and other local schools, the campaign means extra deputies watching traffic flow during the morning and afternoon rush.
“The start of the new school year is an exciting time for students and families, and we want parents to know we’re doing everything we can to help make it a safe one,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “Operation Blue Bird is about protecting our children and encouraging drivers to slow down, stay focused, and remember that a few extra seconds of patience can save a life.”
The first weeks of school bring heavier traffic, more children walking and riding bicycles, and buses making frequent stops throughout the county. Drivers are encouraged to leave earlier, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, obey school zone speed limits, remain alert for crossing guards, and always stop for school buses when required by law. While the initiative includes increased enforcement, its purpose is prevention — maintaining a visible presence to reduce crashes and improve compliance with traffic laws.
