Habitat Walton County Spotlights Women Build Day and Fall Festival
Habitat for Humanity of Walton County, the affiliate that builds homes for families from Paxton and DeFuniak Springs down through Freeport, is calling on the community to get involved this fall through hands-on homebuilding projects and a major fundraising festival.
The organization is spotlighting its Women Build Program, an initiative designed to empower and educate women from all backgrounds through workshops, luncheons, and construction projects across Walton County.
“Our purpose is to empower and educate the women in our community from all walks of life,” said Teresa Jones with Habitat Walton County. “We bring people together to build homes, community, and hope.”
The group is hosting a Women Build Day this Saturday, September 26, giving volunteers the opportunity to work alongside instructors to learn construction skills and operate tools while helping build affordable housing. No prior construction experience is required.
In addition to building on site, organizers are gearing up for the annual Market Shops Bloody Mary Festival on Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are available for $65, with all proceeds directly benefiting Habitat for Humanity Walton County’s ongoing housing initiatives. Organizers say volunteer opportunities are also available for those who want to support the festival behind the scenes.
Local partners, including long-standing sponsor Compass Builders, emphasize the direct community impact of supporting these events.
“Building a house helps the community, and it’s a great organization to be a part of,” said Jennifer Jones of Compass Builders.
The organization recently celebrated closing on its 76th home in the area, marking another milestone in its mission to provide stable homeownership opportunities to local families.
For Freeport residents, the program hits close to home: Habitat for Humanity of Walton County explicitly lists Freeport among the communities it serves, from Paxton and DeFuniak Springs in the north to Freeport and the beaches of South Walton.
