Walton County Extension Rolls Out Fall Programs for Freeport Families
Freeport kids have a new 4-H chess club to join this fall, and local gardeners can get their landscapes ready for winter at a free lecture next month. Both are part of the fall program slate the Walton County Extension Office announced this week for residents across the county.
The 4-H lineup spans interests from shooting sports to fine art. The One Shot Air Rifle Club teaches safety, life skills and shooting sports for ages 8 to 18, while the Masterpiece Art Club explores color, texture and creativity for the same ages. The Naturally Balanced Homeschool Club mixes hands-on learning and social fun for ages 5 to 18, and new this season is a 4-H Chess Club open to all skill levels for ages 10 to 18.
Adults have their own calendar. The Master Gardener program hosts “Before the Freeze, After the Thaw,” a free lecture on winter landscape prep, on Nov. 5, and the Panhandle Cattlemen’s Meeting follows on Nov. 16 with a fecal egg count demonstration billed as a chance to “Get the scoop on your cow POOP.” The Homestead & Small Farmers series continues with a session on pea fowl flock management, and a guided Grayton Beach Ecosystem Tour through coastal dune lake ecosystems is set for Nov. 6.
The programs run through UF/IFAS Extension Walton County, the University of Florida’s extension office at 732 N 9th Street in DeFuniak Springs, which serves residents across Walton County, including Freeport. Residents can call (850) 892-8172 for more information.
