Trunk or Treat: Freeport's Favorite Halloween Tradition

Page content

Halloween in a small town hits different. And in Freeport, the main event isn’t knocking on strangers’ doors — it’s Trunk or Treat.

What is Trunk or Treat?

Trunk or Treat is exactly what it sounds like: local businesses, churches, clubs, and residents decorate the trunks of their cars and hand out candy to kids in a safe, central location. No walking dark neighborhoods, no wondering which houses are participating — just one big parking lot full of creativity, candy, and community spirit.

When and Where

The city typically hosts Trunk or Treat in mid-to-late October. The 2026 date hasn’t been announced yet, but past events have been held in downtown Freeport. Watch the City of Freeport calendar for the official date.

For Participants (Trunk Hosts)

Want to park your vehicle and hand out candy? The city encourages businesses, organizations, churches, and community groups to participate. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s great exposure if you’re promoting a local business or cause.

To register your trunk: Check the City of Freeport Trunk or Treat page for the signup form once dates are announced.

For Families

  • Bring a bag or bucket for candy
  • Costumes are encouraged (and expected)
  • Arrive early — the good candy goes fast
  • Don’t forget to vote for your favorite decorated trunk

What Makes Freeport’s Trunk or Treat Special

It’s not just the candy — it’s the creativity. Past years have seen everything from haunted house trunks to pirate ships to full-blown movie set recreations. Local businesses go all out. Churches team up for group themes. And the kids? They just show up with the biggest bags they can find and grin from ear to ear.

If you’re new to Freeport, this is a perfect event to meet your neighbors and see what the community is about. If you’ve been here for years, you already know — and you’re probably already planning your trunk theme.
