Salvation Army Serving Free Meals at Two Freeport Sites

Free meals are being served in Freeport on Monday as Hurricane Isaias recovery continues. The Salvation Army is scheduled at two sites — the Choctaw Beach Community Center at 126 Water Oak St., starting at noon and running about two hours or while supplies last, and the Walton County Planning Department parking lot at 842 State Highway 20 East.

After the Choctaw Beach stop, the team will canvass surrounding neighborhoods, bringing food to residents who cannot reach a fixed site — outreach that matters in a county where the Sheriff’s Office says cell signal and internet remain limited at best.

The Freeport stops are part of a meal schedule coordinated through Walton County Emergency Management. The American Red Cross began handing out prepackaged meals and water at 9 a.m. at the Red Bay Community Center at 10624 Rock Hill Rd. in Ponce De Leon. Operation BBQ Relief is serving lunch at noon at the Santa Rosa Beach Walmart at 6861 E. U.S. Highway 98, and at the DeFuniak Springs Walmart at 1226 Highway 331 South, where dinner is estimated for 4 p.m. The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Florida Division is also serving meals at the Paxton Agricultural Complex on U.S. Highway 331 North.

The meal sites are separate from the county’s points of distribution, which continue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with water, ice and shelf-stable meals — including the Freeport Sports Complex at 563 Hammock Trail E. No end date has been announced for the meal schedule. The Sheriff’s Office has been updating its Hurricane Isaias page daily, and residents should watch Walton County Emergency Management channels for new sites and times.
