Freeport Sports Complex Open for Water, Ice and Meal Distribution

Walton County has opened water, ice and meal distribution sites as Hurricane Isaias recovery continues, and Freeport is on the list. The Freeport Sports Complex at 563 Hammock Trail E. is distributing bottled water, ice and shelf-stable meals from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents are asked to follow directions at each site as supplies move out the door. Three other Walton County locations are handing out the same items: the DFS Community Center at 361 N. 10th St. in DeFuniak Springs, the Emerald Coast Boys and Girls Club at 80 Boys and Girls Way in Santa Rosa Beach, and the Paxton Ag Center on U.S. Highway 331 N. in Paxton.

The Paxton site will open later than the rest because supplies were still on the way when the county announced the locations, and that distribution point is being supported by the City of Paxton.

For Freeport, the Hammock Trail assignment puts the county’s supply line inside a venue local families know well. The regional sports complex, reached off Great Hammock Bend and Bay Loop Road, covers 60 acres of ballfields, a splash pad and a playground. It is also the facility city leaders designated for exactly this job: under an interlocal agreement with Walton County Emergency Management, the council approved renewing the complex’s role as a point-of-delivery site during natural disasters or emergencies.

Power remains the stubborn edge of the recovery, and it is the reason bottled water and ice are in demand. A WJHG tally put 448,000 utility accounts across Florida in the dark as recovery crews mobilized, and until the grid catches up, many households have no way to keep food cold or tap water flowing. The county has not said how long the distribution sites will operate, so residents should watch Walton County Emergency Management channels for updates.
