Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting: Freeport Gets Festive

Page content

There are two types of people: those who start playing Christmas music in October, and those who wait until after Thanksgiving. Whichever camp you’re in, Freeport’s Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting is the event that officially kicks off the holiday season in Walton County.

The Parade

Freeport’s annual Christmas Parade winds through downtown, bringing floats, marching bands, classic cars, fire trucks, horses, and — of course — Santa Claus himself. Local businesses, schools, churches, and organizations all deck out their entries in lights, garland, and enough holiday cheer to power the town through New Year’s.

The parade is typically held in early-to-mid December. The exact 2026 date will be announced by the city in the fall. Based on past years, expect an evening start time so all the lights really shine.

Tree Lighting

After the parade, the crowd gathers for the official tree lighting ceremony. It’s a simple moment — someone flips a switch, the tree goes from dark to dazzling, and the crowd cheers like they just watched a touchdown. There’s usually hot chocolate, maybe some cookies, and definitely a lot of people taking photos.

Why You Should Go

  • It’s free
  • It’s the one time of year downtown Freeport feels like a Hallmark movie set
  • Santa is there. With a real beard. Probably.
  • Hot chocolate tastes better when you’re standing outside in 50-degree Florida weather
  • You will run into at least three people you haven’t seen since high school

For Parade Participants

If your business, club, church, or organization wants to enter a float, watch the city’s announcements in November. Registration details are typically posted on the City of Freeport events page.

Parking & Tips

  • Downtown parking fills up fast — arrive at least 30 minutes early
  • Bring folding chairs if you want a guaranteed spot along the route
  • Dress in layers (yes, even in Florida — December evenings can be chilly)
  • Don’t forget your camera

The 2026 date will be announced on the City of Freeport website and social media channels in late fall.
