Walton County Commissioners Launch Budget Workshop Series at Freeport Boardroom

The Walton County Board of County Commissioners opened its Fiscal Year 2027 budget workshop series on Tuesday, July 7, at the Freeport Commons Boardroom, giving residents their first look at county spending priorities for the coming year.

The workshop, held at 842 State Highway 20 East in Freeport, covered an overview of the proposed FY 2027 budget, potential impacts of pending legislative changes, and state-mandated budget items. Commissioners also reviewed funding requests for the Board of County Commissioners budget and contingency fund, Public Works and Engineering, Building Construction and Maintenance, the Solid Waste Fund, the Planning Department and Short-Term Rentals Program, Code Compliance, and county libraries. The session began at 10 a.m. and was open to the public.

The July 7 session is the first of four workshops scheduled every Tuesday in July. The series continues July 14 at the DeFuniak Springs Courthouse Boardroom, July 21 at the Paxton Agricultural Center, and July 28 at the South Walton Annex Boardroom. Each workshop starts at 10 a.m. and addresses different sections of the county budget, allowing commissioners and the public to work through the spending plan department by department before the new fiscal year begins October 1.

The decision to hold the opening workshop in Freeport reflects the city’s growing role as a hub for county government operations. The Freeport Boardroom at Freeport Commons regularly hosts Planning Commission meetings, Design Review Board sessions, and Board of County Commissioners workshops. The venue at 842 State Highway 20 East, Suite 118, sits along the SR 20 corridor that connects Freeport to DeFuniak Springs and serves as a central meeting point for residents across Walton County.

For Freeport residents, the budget workshops offer a direct window into how county tax dollars are allocated. The FY 2027 budget will fund road maintenance, solid waste services, planning and development review, and code compliance — functions that affect daily life across the county. Residents who want to attend future workshops can find the full schedule on the Walton County website or contact the Office of Management and Budget at (850) 892-8176.
