Nighttime Lane Closures on SR 20 in Freeport for Geo-Tech Investigation
Walton County has announced temporary nighttime lane closures on SR 20 in Freeport beginning Monday, July 27, as geotechnical crews conduct soil borings for a roadway embankment investigation.
The closures are part of the SR 20 Muck Delineation project (FPID: 220635-8), which involves drilling 10-to-30-foot Standard Penetration Test soil borings and 1-to-10-foot hand auger borings along the highway. Three of the boring locations will require intermittent closures of both the eastbound and westbound lanes, according to a notice posted by Walton County on July 16.
EGS, the engineering firm authorized to conduct the work, will operate within the travel lanes of SR 20 during nighttime hours to minimize disruption to daily commuter traffic. The lane closures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 27, and continue through 5 a.m. on Thursday, July 30. The work will follow a Temporary Traffic Control plan utilizing signing patterns SP 102-603, -601, -602, and -604, with an on-site AMOT officer, Matt McConnell of EGS, coordinating traffic operations. Drivers can expect intermittent single-lane closures during the overnight hours, with flagging operations to guide vehicles safely through the work zones.
The muck delineation study is a critical step in the broader SR 20 improvement efforts. The geotechnical investigation helps engineers identify areas of unstable soil — or “muck” — beneath the roadway that can cause settlement and pavement failure over time. By mapping these problem areas, the Florida Department of Transportation and Walton County can design targeted solutions to strengthen the roadbed and extend the lifespan of one of Freeport’s primary east-west corridors.
SR 20 serves as a vital artery for Freeport residents, connecting the city to the wider region through intersections with US Highway 331 and continuing west toward the Bay County line. The corridor has seen increased attention from transportation planners as Freeport’s population and traffic volumes have grown in recent years. During a July 14 city council meeting, council members discussed ongoing traffic concerns on Highway 20 and directed staff to work with FDOT and the city’s lobbying team on potential turn-lane improvements.
Motorists traveling SR 20 during the closure period should plan for potential delays during nighttime hours, follow posted signage and flagger instructions, and consider alternate routes when possible. For more information about the project, residents can contact Freeman Sanders, PE, Geotechnical Project Manager at EGS, at (850) 536-8367.
