Hatcher Cemetery Road in Freeport Closed for Drainage Pipe Repairs
A section of Hatcher Cemetery Road in Freeport is temporarily closed beginning Tuesday, August 18, as Walton County Public Works replaces three drainage pipes along the route.
The closure, which began at 8 a.m., affects a specific stretch of road between two ponds where Hatcher Cemetery Road loops between State Road 20 and County Highway 83A. Walton County Public Works announced the project in a civic alert, noting that the pipe replacement is necessary to maintain drainage infrastructure in the area.
Residents who live along the closed section will still have access to their properties during the work. Motorists can enter or exit Hatcher Cemetery Road from either State Road 20 or County Highway 83A, depending on which side of the closure their property sits on. The county did not announce a specific reopening date, stating only that the section will remain closed until the work is completed and the roadway can safely reopen to traffic.
Hatcher Cemetery Road is a rural route in the Freeport area that runs near the historic Hatcher Cemetery, one of the older burial grounds in Walton County. The road’s loop between State Road 20 and County Highway 83A passes between two ponds, making drainage maintenance critical for keeping the roadway passable during heavy rains — a recurring concern during Florida’s wet season.
Drivers who use Hatcher Cemetery Road as a connector between State Road 20 and County Highway 83A should plan for detours until the project is finished. Walton County Public Works can be reached at (850) 892-8108 for questions about the closure or the pipe replacement project.
