Freeport Regional Sports Complex Closed for Storm Cleanup

The Freeport Regional Sports Complex is currently closed after Hurricane Isaias left fallen trees and debris across the city park, and its facilities and playgrounds are off limits for now. The site is still open as a supply point, though, with bathrooms available and supplies from FEMA and the National Guard on hand for residents who need them.

The city announced the closure Tuesday on its Facebook page. The facilities and playgrounds at the 60-acre park — five lighted baseball fields, multipurpose fields for soccer and football, a splash pad and a large playground among them — are closed with no reopening timeline given. The park sits at 563 Hammock Trail E., reached off Great Hammock Bend and Bay Loop Road.

The closure does not interrupt the park’s other storm job. Walton County picked the complex as one of its four resource distribution sites after Isaias, and crews there have been handing out bottled water, ice and shelf-stable meals from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. since Sunday, alongside the Paxton Ag Center, the Emerald Coast Boys and Girls Club in Santa Rosa Beach and the DeFuniak Springs Community Center.

The complex joins a countywide cleanup that began Wednesday, when Walton County started curbside storm debris pickup with an estimated 250,000 cubic yards of limbs and wreckage to haul away. Until the fields and playgrounds reopen, the water, ice and meal distribution at the park continues.
